How Do I Measure For A New Garage Door
Ordering a new garage door for your home or commercial building can be exciting. Not only will you have a new door style that complements your property, but you will also have a door that runs more efficiently, is modern and secure.

Most brand new homes come with standard garage door openings. However, older homes may come with garage door openings that are not quite square or standard. If you are looking for a new garage door, it is important to measure all garage door openings before ordering a new door.

How do you measure the garage door opening?

You can use this 5-step process to get all the measurements you need for selecting and ordering your garage door.

  • Step 1 - Measure the opening's width at the widest point. This is from the finished edge of the door to the other finished edge of the door.
  • Step 2 - Measure the opening's height at the highest point. This is the distance from the finished header in the floor below.
  • Step 3 - Measure the available space inside the garage on either side of the opening. You will need about 4 inches on either side of the door to accommodate the track and sensors.
  • Step 4 - Measure the area above the door opening to the ceiling. If you are going with a carriage house door installation, you need 15 inches of clearance. Other door styles require 12 inches. If you want an automatic door opener, you will need 3 extra inches. If you find that you don't have the head space, the installer may need to use special hardware to handle the low clearance.
  • Step 5 - Measure the distance from the opening to the back of the garage. You need enough space to accommodate the height of the door plus 18 inches for a manual door. If you want to install an opener, you need the height of the door plus 4 feet 2 inches.
Where can I order a new garage door?

If you have the measurements, the next step is to select your garage door style and order it. You will find there are hundreds of styles available on the market today in both residential and commercial overhead doors.

With the measurements in hand, you should contact a licensed, insured, and bonded garage door company and get your new door on order. When you are ready to get a new garage door, contact Willow Creek Overhead Door in Amarillo, Texas.

What To Look For When Buying a New Garage Door
Replacing your garage door will make a distinct design statement for your home. It will also give you a modern, efficient door that can last for years. If you are looking to replace your garage door, consider style and function, in addition to your budget, before making a final buying decision.

What questions should you ask before buying a new garage door for your home?

When looking at all the option available in garage doors, it is important to ask a few questions before making the purchase. Here is a brief list of questions to ask:

  • When should I replace a garage door with a new one? This can happen for any number of reasons. You might want to update the look of your garage or need to replace a damaged one.
  • What is the best garage door for my property? Garage doors come in distinct styles for residential and commercial properties. Residential garage doors come in many styles to complement the home. Commercial overhead doors offer tough functionality.
  • How much will a new garage door cost? This can vary from several hundred dollars up to the tens of thousands. It all depends on your home, technical requirements, your tastes and budget. This is why it is often better to work with a professional, trustworthy garage door business.
  • What style and design will best complement my property? This is a subjective choice. The contractor can help you look through available styles and features, and come up with a few options that will work.
  • What is the expected waiting time between ordering the garage door and getting it installed? Unless you select a common style the contractor can get quickly, you may have to wait a few weeks for the door to arrive. The time it takes also depends on the garage door company you choose to work with. Another benefit of working with a local business is that you can contact someone easily if you have a question or concern.
  • How long will it take to install the new garage door? In most cases, the actual installation will only take one day or two.
  • What kind of warranty comes with the garage door? This also depends on the manufacturer and garage door company. You need to know the warranty period and exactly what it covers.
What else should you know before making a garage door purchase?

If you are thinking about purchasing a new garage door, work with a contractor who carries a number of styles and designs at several price points.
